DINER REVIEW • NOV 06, 2013
We wandered in here after an afternoon of shopping in Box Hill and were surprised at the classy interior.
We were seated by an attentive waiter who proceeded to explain the menu. You could choose between a BBQ set menu or ala carte set menu. We choose ala carte - my partner ordered the Chicken Kara Age and I choose the seasonal special of miso grilled cod.
Our meals came with delicious starters of chawan mushi and a platter of sushi. Chawan mushi was slightly on the bland side but nice enough, and the sushi was delicate and light. Our mains were absolutely delicious and generously portioned. Dessert was a berry pannacotta, just the thing to finish off our meal.
My only quibble with the restaurant was that it was so small that it was hard to have an intimate dinner with the owner sitting 2 feet away doing his taxes! And the waiter, though cheerful and friendly, was slightly condescending and asked my Caucasian partner halfway through his meal if he would like a fork instead (!)
Overall it was a nice experience but I'm not sure we would be back for a date night, maybe it's better experienced as a group.

For a restaurant situated on the main strip in Box Hill Irodori House is strangely hidden. Walking into that place on a cool Wednesday spring night was like entering Narnia, but without snow and fauns. The atmosphere was classy and simple. The staff were amazing and attentive and they almost over explained the menu when I asked about certain items. The waiter was an expert in the cuisine and the food was simply amazing. The prices are excellent, we regrettably didn't order the BBQ dishes but will definitely do so next time. We ordered off the standard menu. I've never experienced this before, but we ordered one meal and it came with an entree, sides and dessert (at no extra cost). This included a beautifully textured steamed egg, miso soup (which was delicious), a selection of sushi, a plate of Japanese double fried and battered chicken, salads and other strange but delightful items that I can't quite describe. My main was a generous serving of rolled wagyu on beautiful, delicate... more > |
