Still I rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past, that’s rooted in pain

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

很喜欢她那种平静的语气,有些诗她读着读着,我都能落下泪来。
最早知道她的名字是在Oprah Winfrey的书《What I Know for Sure》

玛雅·安吉罗(Maya Angelou), 美国黑人作家、诗人、剧作家、编辑、演员、导演和教师。
在贫民窟的匮乏生活中长大的安吉罗曾当过厨师、电车售票员、女招待和舞蹈演员。随后的几十年她成为一位成功的歌手、演员、剧作家和导演,广泛涉足于戏剧、电影、音乐等领域,同时还是一位活跃的人权作家,一位非凡的女性。
安吉罗是当代美国黑人女诗人中的杰出代表,她的诗歌代表着鲜明的民族主义立场、“黑色权力”(为黑人种族争取自由和平等)以及黑人妇女的觉醒。
2014年5月28日,玛雅·安吉罗辞世,享年86岁。

1 You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.
或许你无法掌控自己的遭遇,但你可以决定自己是否因此而堕落。
2 If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.

3 No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be  better tomorrow.
