AFTER each paying more than $250,000, the first class of doctors has graduated from Australia's most expensive course at Bond University, and all have obtained hospital internships next year.
The 57 graduates completed their bachelor of medicine bachelor of surgery degree in four years, eight months - more than two years less than it takes at other medical schools.
While other medical graduates are struggling to find internships, all the Bond University graduates will start work in 25 hospitals across four states next month.
The dean of medicine at Bond University, Dr Chris Del Mar, said the class was a trailblazing group that had been unfairly tainted. He said the majority of them benefited from a Queensland Health Department initiative guaranteeing internships for all graduates in a planned response to an overall doctor shortage.
Hospitals taking the new doctors include Bankstown, Concord and Westmead in Sydney, Royal Brisbane, Mater Public and Princess Alexandra in Brisbane, Royal Melbourne and St Vincent's in Melbourne and Royal Adelaide.
When the undergraduate medical degree was started in 2005, student groups and some doctors suggested entry into medicine was for sale to the highest bidder.
Students starting next year will pay $262,559 to undertake the degree, entry requirements being based on their year 12 chemistry, maths B (or equivalent) and English results, as well as performance in the Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test and a structured interview.
''The [medical students] received a number of jibes,'' Dr Del Mar said. ''They took on the Australian Medical Students Association, who were not supportive, and they withstood the deprecating remarks aimed at them by teachers in hospitals.
''I think there is a bugbear of egalitarianism which doesn't exist in any other area of Australian life. Nearly 40 per cent of Australian school children are privately educated.
''The cost of the course is high. It is a big slug. But we are a non-profit university, and that is how much it costs to provide.''
The National Union of Students president, David Barrow, said the medical degree undermined entry based on merit.
Mr Barrow said the union had a problem with the fact that families who were well endowed financially or willing to take on a huge debt could get their children into medicine.
''We would never blame students in that position. But they have been placed under extra- ordinary pressure.''
The valedictorian of the class, Madeline Spooner, said exposure to the real medical environment provided students with great opportunities.
''We had a lot of one-on-one time with consultants, so by the time we actually got to our clinical placements we were well-versed in communication and clinical reasoning skills.
''There's certainly been a lot of interest in our class going through, and I think the medical fraternity will be impressed when we start internships next month.''
CASE NOTES
The medical school started in May 2005.
The bachelor of medicine bachelor of surgery (MBBS) curriculum focuses on evidence-based medicine and provides exposure to the clinical environment, with mock patients feigning illnesses.
The first year costs $58,653. Thereafter the cost is $19,551 per semester.
There are 386 students enrolled in the MBBS program. |
